Every parent has many reasons to be proud of their kid but I just got one more. My son Jacob (Island Jake) got himself and me up early Tuesday morning to head up to the high school where he joined hundreds of other school kids from all grades and all over the Lakeshore, NY School District to get his head shaved.This isn't some kind of cosmetological experiment gone wrong, this is a promotion called "Bald For Bucks" a fun way to raise money for Roswell Park Cancer Institute, the premier cancer research and treatment hospital in the nation. And did I mention it's right here in Buffalo, NY?
Folks from all over the area commit to getting their heads shaved in solidarity with the thousands of people receiving treatment at Roswell in exchange for sponsorship dollars that go directly to Roswell Park.
Jake set his goal at $300, a pretty lofty one for a six year old. Between in-person donations and online via his bald for bucks page he broke his goal and raised $345.
Not quite sure if he realized exactly what shaving his head entailed, or how cold his bald pate would be for that matter. Not quite sure if he knew how much he would hate his father for "encouraging" him to stick it out once the young lady shaving his head took that first fateful swipe, but needless to say mommy and me couldn't be prouder.
